La Federación Mundial de Organizaciones de Ingenieros fue fundada en 1968 en París, en una reunión convocada por UNESCO por representantes de: UPADI, FEANI (Federación Europea de Asociaciones de Ingenieros), CEC (Commonwealth Engineers Council), FAE (Federation of Arab Engineers) y FAOE (Federation of African Organizations of Engineers). En la actualidad estas organizaciones conjuntamente con otras cinco que representan a distintas regiones del mundo, integran los Miembros Internacionales.
El Estatuto (Art. 9) otorga la prerrogativa de nominar Miembros Asociados de la Academia a la "Organización de su país que es miembro de FMOI" refiriéndose así a los Miembros Nacionales que la integran . Al iniciar el año 2009 la Academia tiene 9 Miembros Asociados de otros tres Continentes: Europa, Asia y África . Entre ellos, tres ex Presidentes de FMOI .
