Engineer,
He joined
the Board of Eurotunnel as a non-Executive Member in 1987. He was Managing Director of the Project for
two years. Immediately prior to that he
was eight years on the Board of London Transport and was Chairman and Chief
Executive of London Underground Ltd. He was involved with the Docklands Light
Railway from the outset, latterly as Chairman. He was the first Managing
Director of the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway Corporation 1975-1980 and was
the first Director General of the
Emeritus
Professor of Transport Engineering in the Dept of Civil and Environmental
Engineering at
Fellow of
the Royal Academy of Engineering and of both the Institution of Civil Engineers
(of which he was President 1995-96) and the Chartered Institute of Logistics
and Transport (of which he was Chairman for several years of the Transport
Policy Committee). He was International President of the Chartered Institute of
Logistics and Transport 1999-2001 and became President of the Commonwealth
Engineers Council in March 2000. He is a member of the Executive Council of the
World Federation of Engineering Organizations. He has been Chairman of the
Board for the Engineering Profession of the Senate of the Engineering
Council. He is a former President of the
Light Rail Transit Association and of the Association for Project
Management. He is a Director of the
Major Projects Association. He has been active in the International Union of
Public Transport and is now an Honorary Member.
In
1988 he was the first recipient of the Highways Award of the Institution of
Highways and Transportation and in 2000 the first recipient of the Herbert Crow
Award of the Worshipful Company of Carmen.
In 2002 he received the President’s Award of the Engineering Council. He
is a former member of the Construction Industry Council. He is a Trustee, and a member of the Public
Policy Committee, of the RAC Foundation for Motoring.
